Virtual event on ‘#LiftUpPhilanthropy: Boosting local philanthropy to make aid localisation a reality’ during the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, on September 23, 2021, 9:00 am to 10:15 am (EDT). This is an invitation-only event.

This high-level digital event - in the framework of the project ‘Unlocking Philanthropy’s Potential: Enhancing the enabling environment, effectiveness and leveraging the contributions of philanthropy actors’ - is organised jointly by WINGS and the SDG Philanthropy Platform, with the support of the European Union and in partnership with the Asia Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), CIVICUS, the Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), UNDP, and the Wilde Ganzen Foundation.

Selected speakers include Kitty van der Heijden, Director-General of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands; Martin Seychell, Deputy Director-General of the European Union’s Directorate General on International Partnerships; Lysa John, Secretary General of CIVICUS; Vivi Yulaswati, Expert Staff on Social Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Ministry of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia; representatives of USAID and from the philanthropy sector.

This session will offer a space to reflect on how organisations developing philanthropy at the local level could bridge the gaps between the intention of channelling assistance to local actors and the actual delivery of long-term, sustainable, locally-built solutions. The discussion will focus on complementing cross-border giving and specific actions and examples of successful support for local resource mobilisation including #ShiftThePower initiatives and alternative funding models.
